Gmail or Yahoo Mail?

According to the Hitwise.com rankink of the 31st october 2009, Yahoo is the most popular webmail provider in the US, followed by Hotmail, Gmail and AOL. So, why I don' t talk about Hotmail too? the answer is simple, the service that Hotmail provide can't be compared with gmail or yahoo, all the users that Hotmail can ave are mostly for chatting reasons.

In this post I will just write my opinions about the two webmail providers, good and bad things, I use accounts in both providers everyday, for work and for contact my family and friends. For this blog I use yahoo, for another blog gmail, for my job just Gmail.. let's see how to choose the right account for you...

We will talk first about Gmail. Is much younger than yahoo mail, almost 8 years, but it grew up very quickly and it became one of users top choice in few time, allready in the first beta version when you could only have an account with invitation and not with sign in. Let's check what is good and what's bad agout Gmail.

+ Fast, much faster than Yahoo, the feeling of real time messaging that gmail created broke the static system of yahoo and introduced a more dynamic way to send messages

+ The interface is something completely different than yahoo and in the past year was improved a lot, for users that come from yahoo the first moment on gmail can be wierd but in the end is easy to understand and everybody will get habit quicly

- Organize and archive the mails is a little bit confusing, specially for business purpose. In the last 6 months anyway gmail introduced something similar to the folders in yahoo and things are getting much better.

+Beta forever.... the most dynamic thing that google could do, and it seems that they use this politic in every product.

+ Automatic forwarding is allowed

+ Easy to use with Outlook

+ Gmail introduced first the chat on page and it was a revolutionary element itself!

+ 7.5 GB storage and 25 mb attachment allowed

+ 100% compatible with every google products... I love Google docs and I can' t wait for Wave

+ Search an archived email is very easy, good internal search engine.

Now is Yahoo Mail turn, one of the first provider that gave  a free webmail service, it is the most used in the world since 1997 when yahoo mail was created.
In my  point of view yahoo is not dynamic as Gmail, but people get habit about it and often people is lazy to change the old for the new. Let's see better...

+ The storage and archiving method is good, the folders system help a lot to keep a clean archive.

- To can use Outlook and the automatic forwarding must upgrade....

+ After more than 10 years yahoo decided to use a new interface similar to outlook, I like it and I thing is much functional that the older version.

- Slower than Gmail

- I use both Gmail and yahoo for more than 3 years, yahoo oftens had bugs and problems, gmail never.


CONCLUSION

I think Gmail is superior than Yahoo Mail, but often people is lazy to change or they just don' t feel to cuz of the habit. Gmail is good for a personal use and for small and big business, yahoo only for personal use but not much for business.
